You post a Reel, ask people to comment one word, and the link they wanted lands in their DMs on its own. No midnight copy-pasting. That is comment-to-DM automation, and for a pet account with one good freebie it is the easiest way to turn a busy post into email subscribers.

You pick a trigger word, like PLAN, GUIDE or LINK. When someone comments that word on your post or Reel, a tool connected to your Instagram sends them a direct message with the link you promised. It works while you sleep, walk the dogs, or film the next one.
The real win is where that link goes. Send people to an email signup for your freebie and every comment becomes a subscriber you own, instead of a follower the algorithm rents back to you.
What you need before you start
- An Instagram professional account (Creator or Business). Messaging tools only connect to professional accounts, and switching is free in your settings.
- A comment-to-DM tool. We use ManyChat, which has a free plan that covers basic comment-to-DM flows. (affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no cost to you)
- One thing worth commenting for. A checklist, a mini guide, a template. One problem, solved well. Our free media kit template is an example of the kind of freebie that works.
- A link for it, ideally an email signup page so the freebie also grows your list. See how to turn followers into paying subscribers for what to do with that list next.
Set it up in 6 steps
- Switch to a professional account. In Instagram, go to Settings, then Account type and tools, and choose Creator or Business.
- Allow connected tools to access your messages. In Instagram settings, open Messages and story replies, then Message controls, and turn on access for connected tools. Without this, no tool can send DMs for you.
- Connect your tool. Sign up for ManyChat (or the tool you prefer), choose Instagram, and log in to connect your account.
- Create the automation. Choose the trigger “user comments on your post or Reel”, pick the post (or all posts), and type your keyword. Add a short public reply too, like “Sent! Check your DMs 🐾”, so people know it worked.
- Write the DM. Two or three short lines and one button with your link. More on tone below.
- Test it, then announce it. Comment the keyword from a second account and check the DM arrives. Then say the keyword clearly in your caption and on screen in the video, because many people never read captions.
Write a DM that still sounds like you
An automated message does not have to read like one. Write it the way you would text a friend who asked for the link:
- Open with warmth, not a sales pitch: “Here it is! The girls approved it personally.”
- Give the link one clear button with a plain label, like “Get the calendar”.
- Add one human line at the end: “Reply here if you get stuck, I read these.” And then actually read them.
Keep it short. Nobody wants a newsletter in their DMs. They wanted a link, so give them the link.
Keyword ideas for pet accounts
- PLAN for a content calendar or posting plan
- KIT for a media kit or starter kit
- LIST for a product list, like the harness, the bed, the treats in the video
- GUIDE for a how-to, like recipes, training, or travel with a pet
- SHOP for your affiliate shop page (always disclose affiliate links in the DM too)
Short, single words in capitals work best. They are easy to type on a phone and hard to misspell.
What to automate, and what never to
Automate the delivery. Sending the same link to two hundred people is a robot’s job.
Never automate the relationship. Real questions, brand inquiries, a follower telling you about their pet who passed: those get a human reply, from you. Check your DMs regularly so the automation does not bury them.
And only send what people asked for. Comment-to-DM works because it is opt-in. Keep it that way.
Two hundred comments, one link, and a dinner that went cold while I pasted it by hand. The essay is why I automated it, and what I refuse to automate.

FAQ
Is ManyChat free?
ManyChat has a free plan that covers basic comment-to-DM automation, and paid plans add more features. Check their pricing page for the current limits.
Do I need a business account?
You need an Instagram professional account, which can be Creator or Business. Switching is free and you can change back at any time.
Will comment-to-DM hurt my reach?
It is a standard way to connect a tool to Instagram messaging. Keep it opt-in, send only what people asked for, and keep the message relevant, and it simply saves you time.
What should the DM link to?
Ideally an email signup page for your freebie, so each comment becomes a subscriber. A shop page with your affiliate links also works, with a clear disclosure.
